The interim Minister of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries of Uruguay, Enzo Benech, confirmed yesterday the opening of the Singapore market for sheep and bovine meat with bone.
In the framework of the hearings with social organizations prior to the opened Council of Ministers meeting, Benech stressed the importance of increasing the production of calves to expand markets.
The Minister also stressed that technological development, the use of grains as a complement to animal feed, and export quotas such as 481 (premium meat for the European Union) helped to reached this goal.
In addition, he defended the policy of exporting live cattle as a way to increase the value of calves and, at the same time, to achieve the necessary production.
"Livestock is one of the pillars of the Uruguayan economy and, therefore, it is good news that work levels are increasing, albeit slowly, and hopefully we can maintain it," added the interim minister.
