Paraguayan Foreign Minister Eladio Loizaga said on Monday that “much more should be done” to keep trade growing between Paraguay and Taiwan, during the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the two countries’ diplomatic relations.
Loizaga noted in the event at the Foreign Ministry, together with the Taiwanese ambassador to Paraguay, Alexander Yui, the importance of increasing the quota of Paraguayan beef exports to Taiwan, an amount that has skyrocketed.
“The quota of our beef accepted by Taiwan is very favorable now, up from 3,500 tons to 10,406 tons, something we achieved jointly this year,” the foreign minister said.
He also described as “very valuable” the cooperation with Taiwan in educational material and lauded the possibility that the island might offer Paraguayan students the chance to study at Taiwan’s “prestigious” universities.
Loizaga said that a result of six decades of relations has been the signing of dozens of bilateral agreements of cooperation in different areas.
“Around 70 cooperation accords have been signed that contribute to the growth of our economy, improvements in our production and productivity, the possibility that our countrymen will have decent homes and the training of our human resources,” the foreign minister said.
For his part, the Taiwanese ambassador mentioned Paraguay’s “close relationship” with the island in matters of cooperation and mutual understanding.
Paraguay and Taiwan have maintained diplomatic ties since 1957, and on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of that relationship they staged a number of events in Asuncion, such as the participation of Taiwan’s diplomatic delegation in Congress last week, during which the ambassador spoke of the “brotherhood” that has existed ever since.
At that event, the ambassador described Paraguay as “a historic ally in Latin America.”
Taiwan, considered by China as a rebel province, has diplomatic ties with some 20 countries, with about 10 of them in Latin America and the Caribbean.
