Japanese automaker Nissan reaffirmed Friday its plans to begin producing in Argentina, where it will invest $600 million, coinciding with the visit of the Argentine president to Japan.
Mauricio Macri met Nissan CEO Hiroto Saikawa on Friday and discussed the latest developments on the plant the Japanese company started building in Cordoba in March.
"Argentina is key to realizing Nissan's growth ambitions in Latin America," Saikawa said during the meeting with Macri, who is on a two-day working visit to Japan.
Nissan will begin producing the NP300 Frontier pickup truck at the Cordoba plant in the second half of 2018, the Japanese company said in a statement.
"Japan has a significant presence in Argentina, with three companies (in the country) and hopefully there will be more to ensure that Argentina produces a million vehicles of international quality," Macri said at an economic forum between Japan and Argentina.
In 2015, Nissan had announced it would go from being an importer in Argentina to opening a subsidiary to begin manufacturing its first model in the plant in Cordoba.
The plant will also produce pickups for Renault and Daimler, which, along with the NP300 Frontier, will be sold in Argentina and exported to other countries in the region.
