JAC J2, the first automobile fully assembled in Paraguay, was rolled out on Monday at a ceremony that included President Horacio Cartes.
The debut is the fruit of a project launched late last year by Reimpex, the Paraguayan partner of China’s JAC Motors.
The JAC J2 is a “high quality, well-equipped car” that is “accessible in terms of price,” Reimpex owner Jorge Samaniego said during the event in Asuncion.
Samaniego said JAC sent 10 technicians to Asuncion to train Reimpex’s engineers and workers in the assembly of the J2 model.
The five-door hatchback, which sells for roughly 50 million guaranies (USD 8.500), is equipped with a 1.0-liter engine, air conditioning, and hydraulic steering, the Industry and Commerce Ministry said.
One of the first to test drive the JAC J2 was Cartes accompanied by Industry and Commerce Minister Gustavo Leite.
Cortes said on Twitter that the JAC J2 project will create some 1,200 jobs.
